As Cindy Larson enjoys a tranquil moment in her backyard garden, she spots a beautiful butterfly fluttering out
of the corner of her eye. She sets down her book, and a broad smile widens across her face. This is the exact
moment that she'd planned for. You see, Cindy created part of her garden specifically to attract the Monarch
butterflies that intrigue her so. (She also devotes another part of her garden to attracting hummingbirds.) The
orange-and-black wonder lands on a few of Cindy's flowers, and then sets off again toward its ultimate
destination.
Cindy is fascinated by the Monarch butterfly's annual migration from Maine to a small hilltop in Mexico. It's a
journey that would seem too daunting for such a fragile creature, yet year after year, the butterflies complete
the journey guided only by their instincts and a strong sense of determination. "I just think it's an incredible
feat," Cindy says. "For something so small and vulnerable to make it that far, it's a portrait of determination."
Anything is Possible
Cindy not only admires that determination, she's inspired by it. It's a symbol that with enough courage and
belief in yourself, anything is possible. It's a philosophy she tries to instill in others through her role as a
Caravan volunteer through her church. (Caravan is similar to Girl Scouts.) One memorable experience came
when Cindy was working the zip line at a camp for 6th grade girls. Two of the girls were terrified to do it, but
Cindy helped them overcome their fears and convinced them to give it a shot. Thanks to Cindy's gentle coaxing,
they completed the zip line, loved it, and learned a valuable lesson in the process. "You can't accomplish anything
in life unless you first try," Cindy says.
